EL SHADDAI – Encyclopedic Dictionary of Bible and Theology

Name of God (translated Almighty God) with which (Exo 6:3) he appeared to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; recorded once with Abraham (Gen 17:1) and four times with Jacob (Gen 28:3; Gen 35:11; Gen 43:14; Gen 48:3). The Almighty (Shaddai without El) is often used as the name of God; in Jacob’s last words (Gen 49:25), in Balaam’s prophecies (Num 24:4, Num 24:16), by Naomi (Rth 1:20-21), 30 times by Job and his friends (Job 5:17—Job 37:23), by God Himself (Job 40:2), and twice in the Psalms (Psa 68:14; Psa 91:1). The name is rare in the prophets (Isa 13:6; Eze 1:24; Eze 10:5; Joe 1:15). Lord Almighty (Gk., pantokrator) occurs nine times in the NT (2Co 6:18; eight times in Revelation).
