Loot with which the victor is made after a battle or – less frequently – the thief after having stolen. (Lu 11:21, 22) Although Israel took spoil from the peoples they defeated, that was not the motive for their battles, but only a way of rewarding them Jehovah for carrying out his will as the executors of the.
When Abraham ransomed Lot from Kedorlaomer, he refused to accept the spoil that the king of Sodom offered him, so that no one would say that it was the king, and not Jehovah, who had made him rich. (Ge 14:1-24; Heb 7:4)

Dispossession distribution. After Israel took revenge on the Midianites for the numerous deaths that the people had suffered because of them (Nu 25), the Israelites took a large loot, which they divided into two parts, one for the 12,000 men who took part in the fight and the other for those who remained in the camp. Of the part that corresponded to the men who fought, one five hundredth part was given to the Levites, and of the part that remained in the camp, one fiftieth part. In acknowledgment of their appreciation for Jehovah’s protection in the fighting, in which they had suffered no casualties, the soldiers voluntarily gave to the sanctuary a good part of their spoils in gold, especially jewelry and other ornaments. (Nu 31:3-5, 21-54.)
Although this formula was not followed to the letter on later occasions, it seems that it established a general criterion for the division of the spoils. (1Sa 30:16-20, 22-25; Ps 68:12) In the days of the kings, a portion of the spoil was set aside for the king or for the sanctuary. (2Sa 8:7, 8, 11, 12; 2Ki 14:14; 1Ch 18:7, 11)

Conquest of Canaan. The cities of the seven nations that were in Canaan were to be completely destroyed and their inhabitants executed; they could only leave livestock alive and keep a few items. (De 20:16-18; 7:1, 2; Jos 11:14) Jericho was an exception as it was the first fruit of the conquest of Canaan: only the metals were saved from destruction and given to the sanctuary. (Jos 6:21, 24) Rahab and his house were saved because of the faith shown by this woman. (Jos 6:25) When the Israelites took over the cities of other nations, they left the virgins and children alive. (De 20:10-15) The spoils had to be cleaned according to gender or material: textiles, skins, and woods were washed; metals were purified by fire. (Nu 31:20-23.)

apostate cities. The Israelite cities that apostatized were annihilated and the spoil was burned in the public square; the city was to “become a heap of ruins to time indefinite.” (Deut 13:12-17)

Christ strips the house of Satan. Jesus Christ despoiled or †˜plundered† ™ the house of Satan when he cast out demons from possessed people and healed them of the afflictions they had brought upon them. (Mt 12:22-29) Furthermore, “when he ascended on high he carried away captives; he gave gifts in men †, which meant that he snatched them from Satan’s control and made gifts of them, men who would contribute to the edification of his congregation. (Eph 4:8, 11, 12.)

False religious eager for dispossession. Jesus Christ said that the scribes and Pharisees were like thieves, they were “full of plunder,” booty that they must have extorted from widows and the defenseless. They also deserved that label for having kept people in religious servitude, depriving them of “the key of knowledge.” (Mt 23:25; Lu 11:52) The religious leaders of the Jewish people had distinguished themselves by having instigated the looting of property belonging to the Christians. (Hebrews 10:34.)
