The words rod and correction speak of discipline. The unruly child shames everyone, particularly her parents (v. Pro 29:17). the verse Pro 29:17 puts the burden of correction on the parents. The word that is translated will give joy, expresses delight in delicious foods (Gen 49:20).

THE ROD AND CORRECTION. Children who are not instructed, disciplined, and restrained by their parents will later shame them and harm themselves. Sometimes words of reprimand are enough; other times they must be accompanied by the rod of correction (cf. v. Pro 29:17; see pro 13:24, note). If physical punishment is used, it is important that it is accompanied by an explanation so that the child clearly understands why the cane was used and what behavior is required of them.
