Commentary on Matthew 8:16 – Exegesis and Hermeneutics of the Bible – Biblical Commentary

At sunset, many demon-possessed were brought to him. With his word he cast out the spirits and healed all the sick,

8:16 And when night came they brought to him many demon-possessed; — Mar 1:21 it says that Jesus taught in Capernaum in the synagogue “on Sabbath days” and v 29 says that they arrived at the house of Peter and Andrew “as they left the synagogue”. They brought him many demon-possessed and sick people at night, because during the day (Saturday) they could not bring them (compare Joh 5:10). — And with the word he cast out demons, and healed all the sick; Wonder of wonders! Just by speaking he showed his authority over demons and diseases. By casting out demons he demonstrated his power over Satan (Luke 10:18; Joh 12:31; Joh 16:33; 2Co 2:14; Eph 4:8; 1Jn 3:8). Matthew says that Jesus healed all the sick. There is not and never has been among those who profess to heal miraculously such a power. Such “heal” a very select group (and also very select diseases).

Divine healing.

THE PROVISION IN THE REDEMPTION.

(1) The problem of sickness and disease is interwoven with the problem of sin and death, such as the consequences of the fall of mankind. While medical science examines the causes of illness and disease in psychological or psychosomatic terms, the Bible presents spiritual causes as the underlying or underlying problem:

(a) sin, which has affected the physical and spiritual constitution of man (eg, Joh 5:5; Joh 5:14), Y

(b) Satan (eg, Ac 10:38; see Tue 9:17; Tue 9:20; Tue 9:25; Luke 13:11; Acts 19:11-12).

(2) God’s provision in redemption is as extensive as the consequences of the fall. For sin, God provides forgiveness; for death, God provides eternal life and resurrection; and for sickness, God provides healing (cf. Ps 103:1-5; Luke 4:18; Luke 5:17-26; Jas 5:14-15). That is why during the earthly life of Jesus Christ, his triple ministry was the teaching of the Word of God, the preaching of repentance (the problem of sin) and the blessings of the kingdom of God (life), and the healing of all kinds of diseases. illnesses and diseases in the village (Matt 4:23-24).

THE REVELATION REGARDING THE WILL OF GOD. God’s will regarding healing is revealed in four ways in the Scriptures:

(1) The declaration of God. In Exo 15:26 God promised health and healing for his people if they remained faithful to his covenant and his commandments (see Exo 15:26, note). His statement had two aspects:

(a) “No disease that I sent to the Egyptians will I send to you”;

(b) “because I am Jehovah your healer.” God continued as the divine physician or healer of his OT people each time they sought his face and obeyed his word (cf. 2Ki 20:5; Ps 103:3).

(2) The ministry of Jesus. As the incarnate Son of God, Jesus Christ was and is the exact manifestation of the nature and character of God (Hebrews 1:3; see Col 1:15; Col 2:9). In his earthly ministry (Matt 4:23-24; Matt 8:14-16; Matt 9:35; Matt 15:28; Mar 1:32-34; Mar 1:40-41; Luke 4:40; Ac 10:38), Jesus revealed the will of God in action (Joh 6:38; Joh 14:10), proving that it is in the heart, nature and plan of God to heal all who are sick and oppressed by the devil.

(3) The provision of Christ’s atonement (Isaiah 53:4-5; Matt 8:16-17; 1Pe 2:24). The atoning death of Jesus Christ was perfect and sufficient to redeem the whole person: spirit, soul, and body. As sin and sickness have become the two giants appointed by Satan to destroy her, forgiveness and healing are two blessings appointed by God to redeem and heal her (cf. Ps 103:3; Jas 5:14-16). The believer must press on in humility and faith to possess the full provision of Christ’s atonement, including the healing of the body.

(4) The current ministry of the church. Jesus commanded the twelve disciples to heal the sick as part of his proclamation of the kingdom of God (Luke 9:1-2; Luke 9:6). He later sent seventy-two disciples to do the same (Luke 10:1; Luke 10:8-9; Luke 10:19). After the day of Pentecost, the early church carried on the healing ministry of Jesus as part of the preaching of the gospel (Acts 3:1-10; Ac 4:30; Ac 5:16; Acts 8:7; Ac 9:34; Acts 14:8-10; Acts 19:11-12; see Tue 16:18; 1Co 12:9; 1Co 12:28; 1Co 12:30; Jas 5:14-16). The NT indicates three ways that God’s healing power and faith were imparted through the church:

(a) the laying on of hands (Tue 16:15-18; Ac 9:17),

(b) confession of conscious sin, followed by anointing the sick with oil (Jas 5:14-16), Y

(c) the spiritual gifts of healing given to the church (1Co 12:9). Note that it is the elders who must pray the prayer of faith.

OBSTACLES TO HEALTH. Sometimes there are obstacles to receiving divine healing, such as:

(1) unconfessed sins (Jas 5:16),

(2) demonic oppression or bondage (Luke 13:11-13),

(3) acute fear or anxiety (Pro 3:5-8; Phil 4:6-7),

(4) past disappointments weakening current faith (Tue 5:26; Joh 5:5-7),

(5) people (Tue 10:48),

(6) teaching that is not biblical (Mark 3:1-5; Tue 7:13),

(7) absence of the prayer of faith on the part of the elders (Mar 11:22-24; Jas 5:14-16),

(8) failure on the part of the church to seek and obtain the gifts of miracles and healings that God has appointed (Acts 4:29-30; Acts 6:8; Acts 8:5-6; 1Co 12:9-10; 1Co 12:29-31; Hebrews 2:3-4),

(9) unbelief (Mark 6:3-6; Tue 9:19; Mar 9:23-24) Y

(10) carnal conduct (1Co 11:29-30). Other times it is not clear why physical affliction persists in the pious (eg, Gal 4:13; Gal 4:17; 1Ti 5:23; 2Ti 4:20). And in still other cases God chooses to take his beloved saints to heaven in the midst of illness (cf. 2Ki 13:14).

STEPS TO TAKE What can the believer in Christ do when he prays and seeks God’s healing for his body?

(1) Be sure you are in good standing with God and others (Matt 6:33; 1Co 11:27-30; Jas 5:16; see Joh 15:7note).

(2) Seek the presence of Jesus Christ in your life, because He is the one who will give you the faith you need (Romans 12:3; 1Co 12:9; Phil 2:13; see Matt 17:20note on genuine faith).

(3) Saturate your life with the Word of God (Joh 15:7; Romans 10:17).

(4) If you do not receive healing, remain in Him (Joh 15:1-7) and examine your life to see what changes God wants to work in your life.

(5) Request the prayers of the church elders and anointing oil, and those of family members and friends (Jas 5:14-16).

(6) Attend a service in which a person with recognized healing ministry is present (cf. Acts 5:15-16; Acts 8:5-7).

(7) Expect a miracle, that is, trust in the power of Christ (Matt 7:8; Matt 19:26).

(8) Rejoice if healing comes right away, but rejoice anyway if it doesn’t come right away (Phil 4:4; Phil 4:11-13).

(9) Know that God’s delays in answering prayers are not necessarily denials of those requests, but that sometimes God has a greater purpose in mind that, when understood, results in more glory for Him (cf. Joh 9:3; Joh 11:4; Joh 11:14-15; Joh 11:45; 2Co 12:7-10) and for the benefit of the believer (Romans 8:28).

(10) Recognize that if you are a dedicated believer, God will never leave you or forsake you. He loves it so much that he has carved it into the palms of his hands (Isaiah 49:15-17).

Note: The Bible recognizes proper medical care (Matt 9:12; Luke 10:34; Col 4:14).

possessed. This means “demonized,” or under the internal control of a demon. All the cases of demonic possession that Christ dealt with involved the possession of demons who completely controlled the bodies of their victims, to the point of speaking through them (Mark 5:5-9), cause disorder (Joh 10:20), violence (Luke 8:29) or mute (Mar 9:17-22).

MIRACLES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CROWD

Matthew 8:16-17

And when it was late that day, many who were under the power of evil spirits were brought to him, and Jesus cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick. This was to fulfill the saying that had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took our weaknesses and bore our sins.”

As we have already seen, Mark’s account of this series of incidents makes it quite clear that they took place on the Sabbath. (Mk 1:21-34 ). It’s explains why this scene took place in the evening, at the end of the day. Under the Sabbath law, which prohibited doing any work on that day, it was illegal to cure on the Sabbath. Measures could be taken to prevent a sick person from getting worse, but not to make him better. The general law was that on Saturdays medical attention could be given only to those in danger of death. Furthermore, it was illegal to carry a load on the Sabbath, and a load was understood to be anything that weighed more than two dried figs. Therefore, it was illegal to carry a sick person from one place to another on a stretcher, or in the arms, or on the shoulders, because that would have been carrying a carGalatiansGa. Officially the Sabbath ended when you could see two stars in the sky, because there were no clocks that told time in those days. That is why the crowd in Capernaum waited until evening to come to Jesus so that he would heal their sick.

But we must think about what Jesus had been doing that Sabbath. He had been to the synagogue and cured the demon possessed man. He had sent the healing to the centurion’s servant. He had healed Pedro’s mother-in-law. No doubt he had spent the whole day preaching and teaching; and he no doubt he had met those who bitterly and insistently opposed Him. It was now afternoon. God gave men the…
