The earth has been profaned by its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, they have falsified the law and they have broken the eternal covenant.

laws … law … everlasting covenant: The general language about covenant breaking applies generally to nations. Perhaps, these words speak of the innate sense of right and wrong (or conscience) that God has given to all humanity, but that we all violate (Romans 1:18-32; compare with Ac 24:16).

THE EARTH WAS CONTAMINATED. The wrath of God will come upon the world because mankind has polluted the earth with sin, immorality, and iniquity. Today, sin predominates; but in the last days God decrees that a terrible and inevitable judgment will come on all who indulge in unrighteousness (see 1Thess 5:2note; 2Thess 2:12note).

everlasting pact. This refers to the covenant with Abraham which is repeatedly described as “perpetual” and “everlasting” (cf. Gen 17:7; Gen 17:13; Gen 17:19; 1Ch 16:15; 1Ch 16:17; Ps 105:8; Ps 105:10; Ps 111:5; Ps 111:9), and which contained devotion to God’s moral law and salvation by faith in Him.
