I HAVE PLACED MY BOW IN THE CLOUDS. The rainbow was God’s sign and continual reminder of his promise never again to destroy all the inhabitants of the earth by a flood. The rainbow should remind human beings of God’s mercy and his fidelity to his word.

— my bow in the clouds: It is evidently the rainbow that here takes on the value of a visible sign of God’s covenant with humanity, just as circumcision is the sign or sign of God’s covenant with Abraham (Gen 17:1-27). The rainbow will also have from now on the value of a reminder or memorial, since it makes present to God the promise not to send a new flood on earth (see Sir 44:18).
