Christian and secular music –

Many Christians today wonder if it is appropriate for a Christian to listen to or dance to secular music. In relation to this we want to say that no rhythm of music, in itself, can be considered sinful; music or musical rhythm is not a moral entity to be sinful. However, there is no doubt that there are certain musical rhythms that have been used in an immoral way, and certain rhythms that have been danced in a highly sinful way. Although that same rhythm in some cases could even induce sensual movements, it is what is inside the man that causes him to behave in this way.

We believe that although there is no biblical verse that categorically prohibits someone from dancing to secular music, there are a number of biblical principles to meditate on before deciding to listen to or dance to secular music. The following questions can help us:

Are the lyrics of this song offensive to God? Today, it is rare that songs composed in the secular world are pleasing to God.
What is the place where this music is being played, or where do I want to dance to it? Is this a place that Jesus would attend? Would he approve of me if I asked his permission to be there?

This rhythm of music that I want to dance; Is it associated with sin in the culture in which I live? And if so, this would lend itself to a misinterpretation on the part of those who observe me or a real bad testimony. Could I serve as a stumbling block?

Regarding the people who are dancing around me in that place, are they doing it in an honorable way or are they dancing in a dishonorable way?

Finally; Is the way I decide to dance respectful, or could it incite sensuality in the other? Either who I dance with, or the people who are watching me. Could I myself be incited to sensuality during the dance?

As you can see, it is not so easy to answer these questions with a yes or a no. Unfortunately, the secular world has composed almost entirely not for the kingdom of heaven but for the kingdom of darkness, and these secular compositions today, for the most part, are composed of immoral lyrics or double meaning, and accompanied with rhythms that are danced in a highly offensive way.
