Boaz (Heb. Bô’az, perhaps “agility”; appears in an inscription found at Haurán). One of the 2 columns erected at the entrance to Solomon’s temple (1Ki 7:15-22; 2Ch 3:17). The name has not been satisfactorily explained despite many efforts. For a possible interpretation see Jaquin 2. Bocado. See wet bread. Horn. See Horn.

one of the two columns cast in bronze, which King Solomon had built before the porch of the temple nave, on both sides of the entrance, whose name, perhaps, means it is solid. This one was to the left, and to the right, the other one, which he called Yakin. They measured eighteen cubits in height and twelve in circumference; the capitals, in the form of lilies, were five cubits high, 1 R 7, 15-22; 2 Chr 3, 17.

A well-off Bethlehem, in the days of the judges, who became an ancestor of Jesus through his marriage to Ruth, the Moabitess, widow of one of Elimelech’s sons (Ruth 2-4). This was in accordance with the levirate law (Deu 25:5-10); Boaz could marry Ruth only after her closest relative (Rth 3:12; Rth 4:1-8) had refused her privilege, or duty. The other refused because, had he married Ruth and had a son, a portion of his property would have been credited to Elimelech’s posterity rather than his own from a previous marriage.
