1. eremoo (ejrhmovw, 2049) means to lay waste, to devastate. Based on the primary meaning of silencing comes that of doing solitary. It is used in the NT only in the passive voice; in Rev 17:16, “they will make her desolate”; in 18.17, 19, she “she has been made desolate” (RVR, 18.16: “they have been consumed”); in Mat 12:25 and Luk 11:17, “he is brought to desolation” (RSV: “desolate”). See DESOLATE.¶ Cf. DESERT. 2. lumaino (lumaivnw, 3075), outrage, mistreat. It is used in the middle voice in Act 8:3, from Saul’s treatment of the church: “ravaged”.¶ 3. portheo (porqevw, 4199), destroy, lay waste, lay waste. It is used of the persecution launched by Saul of Tarsus on the church in Jerusalem (Acts 9:21; Gl 1.13 and 23). The KJV translates the last two passages “destroyed”.¶
