(-> Christ). The anointing, basically carried out with oil, constitutes a type of consecration or investiture that is used with priests and kings. Various texts of the Old Testament deal with the anointed priests (Lv 4,3.5.15; Nm 16,32). Various Bible texts also deal with the anointed kings: 1 Sam 10,1 (Saul’s anointing), 1 Sam 16,13 (David’s anointing), 1 Kings 1,39 (Solomon); even Cyrus, king of Persia, is called God’s anointed (Is 41,5). But the basic anointed of Israel will be David and his messianic descendant (cf. Ps 18,50). The early Church has variously described the anointing of Jesus. Among the most significant texts are the following: (1) Anointing by the Spirit, staining to perform the Messianic task. Lk 4:18: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.” This is the anointing par excellence, the anointing with the Spirit, not with oil like the kings of the world. The anointing is thus interpreted as a messianic investiture, to carry out the liberating action. Along these lines, the texts of baptism are maintained, which must be understood in the form of the messianic anointing of Jesus.

(2) The woman’s tinting, Paschal anointing: “But while he was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster vase of very expensive pure nard perfume; and breaking the alabaster vessel, she poured it out on her head” (Mk 14,3 par). The woman prophet anoints Jesus as king-messiah, so that he fulfills his task, thus preparing him for the paschal death and resurrection. Logically, the women of the empty tomb could not anoint him for the burial of this world (cf. Mk 16,1-4), since Jesus had already been anointed, in another way, for life. u (3) The stain of Jesus is the Spirit. Following this line, First John has identified the anointing of Jesus with the Holy Spirit himself, which is communicated to believers: “But you have the anointing of the Holy One, and you know all things… Whoever denies the Son, neither does he have the Father. He who confesses the Son, he also has the Father. What you have heard from the beginning, remain in you. If what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise he made to us, eternal life. I have written this to you about those who deceive you. But the anointing that you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you; just as the anointing itself teaches you all things, and is true, and is not a lie, as it has taught you, abide in it” (1 Jn 2,20.23-27). This is not an anointing that comes from the Spirit, but the Holy Spirit himself as an anointing, which links us to the Father and the Son. According to this, Christians are messianic men and women: they have the anointing of God, which is the same Holy Spirit.
