(This man, then, acquired a field with the payment of his iniquity, and falling headlong, burst open in the middle, and all his entrails spilled out.

1:18, 19 — It is probable that you will see them. 18,19 be a parenthesis added by Lucas. Peter would not have explained that “that field is called in their own language, Aceldama, which means, Field of blood”, because his listeners knew very well all the details of what happened with Judas, but it was necessary for Lucas to explain it for Theophilus. — This, then, with the wages of his iniquity — Sin pays a wage. Judas was paid thirty pieces of silver, the price of a slave, for betraying Jesus. Sin promises much joy, but pays bitterly. Did Judas receive the pleasure he expected? Compare the cases of Adam and Eve, Achan, the prodigal son, or the case of the people of our time. The truth is that Judas was disgusted with his sin. The money did not give him the pleasure he expected. What did Peter do after denying Jesus? Matthew 27:75. David committed adultery because he thought it would be very pleasurable, but read the Ps 51:1-19 to see the true consequence of their sin. Many believe that it would be very pleasant to take revenge, but in doing so they do not receive the satisfaction that they expected. Who convinced Judas to return the money? His own consciousness. This does not indicate pleasure but remorse and misery. Compare Gen 42:21, the conscience of Joseph’s brothers moved them to say, “Verily we have sinned against our brother, for we saw the anguish of his soul when he begged us, and we did not listen to him; therefore this distress has come upon us.” We cannot escape from sin and its consequence. Gal 6:7-8. Num 32:23, “your sin will find you out”. — He acquired a field, — When did he buy a field? How? Read Matt 26:14-16; Matt 27:3-10. — And falling headlong, he burst open in the middle, and all the entrails of him spilled out. — Compare Matt 27:5, “And throwing the pieces of silver into the temple, he went out, and went and hanged himself.” Lucas explains what happened to him after he hanged himself. — That field is called in their own language Aceldama, which means, Field of blood. His own language was Aramaic. It was called Blood Field because it was bought with blood money (money given to deliver innocent blood).

acquired a field: The field that was bought with the money Judas received for betraying Jesus was actually bought by the priests after Judas hanged himself (Matt 27:6-8). Since the money legally belonged to Judas, the priests purchased the land on his behalf.

he burst…his entrails spilled out: Apparently, the rope that Judas used to hang himself broke so that his body fell, splitting in half. This is the reason why the place is called field of blood.

This…acquired a field. Because the field was bought with the money the Jewish leaders paid Judas to betray Jesus, who returned them (Matt 27:3-10), Luke refers to Judas as the buyer (cp. Zech 11:12-13). wages of his iniquity. The thirty silver coins with which they paid Judas. falling headfirst Apparently, the tree that Judas chose to hang himself on (Matt 27:5) was on the edge of a precipice. Most likely the rope she used broke or the knot came undone, causing his body to shatter as it fell onto the rocks.
