ABIEL – Encyclopedic Dictionary of Bible and Theology

Abiel (Heb. ‘ Abîêl, “God is my Father”, “father of power”; ac. ‘Abi-ilu; sudar. ‘b’I). 1. Ancestor of Saul. According to 1Sa 9:1 he is listed as Saul’s grandfather, but according to 1Sa 14:50, 51, if Abnor is taken as Saul’s uncle, he would be the great-grandfather. One solution to this apparent discrepancy is to interpret the phrase “son of Abiel” (9:1) as “grandson of Abiel.” See HiJoe_2 Valiant of David, originally from Ret-araba (1Ch 11:32), also called Abi-albón* in 2Sa 23:31

(Father is God).

1. Son of Zeror and descendant of Becorat and Aphias, of the tribe of Benjamin. A comparison of 1 Chronicles 8:29-33 and 9:35-39 with 1 Samuel 9:1, 2 and 14:50, 51 gives grounds for believing that Abiel is also called “Jeiel” in the Chronicles account, for there Jeiel is said to be the father of Ner, who became the father of Kish, the father of Saul, and 1 Samuel 14:50, 51 also shows that Abiel (or Jeiel) was the father of Ner. The Chronicles record indicates that Jeiel (or Abiel) had nine other sons, one of whom was named Kish, and this older Kish would therefore be the uncle of the son of Ner who had the same name. Name.
In case Abiel and Jeiel are two names of the same person, their genealogy should be as follows.

Ahijah (descendant of Benjamin)
Becorat
Zeror
Abiel or Jeiel
Abdon Zur Kis Baal Ner Nadab Gedor Ahio Zechariah Miqlot

So when we read in 1 Samuel 9:1 that Kish (that is, the second Kish, Saul’s father) was the “son of Abiel,” it seems that this means that he was his grandson, as in other instances of biblical genealogy in which one or more links are omitted. (For example, although according to 1 Samuel 10:21, “the family of the Matritas” included Kish and Saul, Matri’s name does not appear in the accounts we are considering or anywhere else in the Bible.)
The 1 Chronicles record (8:33; 9:39), obviously the more explicit of the two accounts, seems to clearly present Ner as the immediate father of the second Kish. (See QUIS Nos. 2 and 3.)

2. Another benjamite. (See ABí-ALBí“N.)
