Who is the Holy Spirit and how does he help us?

The Holy Spirit is GodIt is not just any force or energy. He is the third person of the Trinity, composed of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. He dwells in the heart of the believer and enables or empowers the people of God to do the work that the Father has commissioned him to do in this world.

After Jesus was resurrected and just before going up to heaven, he said to his disciples:

But when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will receive power and you will be my witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
(Acts 1:8)

Although Jesus would no longer be on earth in the form of a man, thanks to the Holy Spirit the presence of God would be on each one of his children. He would enable them to be his witnesses throughout the world. Today it is still like that. Each of us who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior have the Holy Spirit within us. He helps us to live in his will to carry God’s presence and his message wherever we go.

The work of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit performs a special work in this world and within the people of God. It is the presence of the almighty God in our midst. He works in different ways helping us to feel the Lord and always walk according to his will.

Let’s look at some of its functions. Let us thank God for the work of the Holy Spirit in us and ask for his help so that we can reflect more of him in our lives.

1. He is the Comforter who accompanies us and teaches us

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter to accompany you always…
(John 14:16)

But I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away because, if I do not, the Comforter will not come to you; instead, if I go, I will send it to you.
(John 16:7)

But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.
(John 14:26)

Thank you, Father, because you have not left me alone. Your Holy Spirit accompanies me and comforts me at all times and in the midst of any situation. Help me to listen carefully and learn everything I need to be able to live a life that is pleasing to you. In the name of Jesus, amen.

2. Convince the world of sin, justice and judgment

And, when he comes, he will convince the world of its error regarding sin, justice and judgment; as for sin, because they do not believe in me; as for justice, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer be able to see me; and as for the judgment, because the prince of this world has already been judged.
(John 16:8-11)

Thank you, Lord, because your Holy Spirit convicted me of sin and touched my heart so that I would believe in you. Help me to carry your presence, your justice and your love wherever I go. Thank you because you have already defeated and judged the evil one and you are the victorious King forever. I want to live aware of your victory and with a heart filled with your Holy Spirit. Help me sir.

3. He guides us in the truth

But, when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, because he will not speak on his own, but will say only what he hears and will announce things to come.
(John 16:13)

… the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept because it neither sees nor knows him. But you do know him, because he lives with you and will be in you.
(John 14:17)

Thank you because I have the clarity of your truth because the Holy Spirit lives with me and is in me. I want to stand firm in the knowledge that I am yours forever and nothing and no one can separate me from your love (Romans 8:35-39). Help me to immerse myself in your Word, which is the truth, to listen to your words of affirmation about who I am in you. Teach me to share your truth with everyone around me. Amen.

4. It gives us power to testify about what God does in us

But when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will receive power and you will be my witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
(Acts 1:8)

Thank you, Father, for the power of your Holy Spirit that dwells in me. Thank you because it enables me to bear witness to your love in my life. Help me carry your message and your presence wherever I go. Help me to be willing to go where you call me so that your name may be exalted and glorified in all nations. In the name of Jesus, amen.

5. It enables us to carry God’s message without fear

After they had prayed, the place where they were gathered was shaken; they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they proclaimed the word of God without any fear.
(Acts 4:31)

Thank you, Father, because your Holy Spirit fills me and enables me to share your message of salvation without any fear. Help me take advantage of the opportunities that come my way on a daily basis. I want your name to be known by everyone starting with my family and friends. I want to be brave for the glory of your name. Please help me. Amen.

6. He gives us gifts to build up the church

Now, there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve, but the same Lord. There are various functions, but it is the same God who does all things in all.
Each one is given a special manifestation of the Spirit for the good of others.
(1 Corinthians 12:4-7)

Thank you, Lord, for your specific manifestation in my life and the gifts you have given me. I want to use them so that your name is exalted and that your church is strengthened. Give me much wisdom in using the gifts and talents you have bestowed on me. I want to bless your people and that you be glorified through me. I love you, Lord, amen.

But they have already been washed, they have already been sanctified, they have already been justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
