Although there are extensive passages in full of commandments, not all of them are equally important in the Bible. In fact, the entire law depends on two commandments:
“The interpreter of the law, to test Jesus, asked him: ‘Teacher, which is the great commandment of the law?’ And He answered her: ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And the second is similar to this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets’”, Matthew 22:35-40.
Here we learn that the great commandment in the Bible is loving God with all that we are and above all else. As He revealed to Israel in Old Testament times (Deut. 6:4-5). This implies treasuring it, obeying it, depending on it, rejoicing in it.
This mandate goes hand in hand with loving our neighbor, as Jesus teaches. From the beginning we were created with this purpose; thus we glorify our creator God. We cannot say that we love God if we do not show love to our neighbor (1 Jn. 4:20). And as the apostle Paul explains, all the commandments towards other people are summed up in loving them as ourselves (Rom. 13:8-10).
The bad news in the Bible is that none Most of us obey these commandments as we should. We all rebel against God and his holiness when we disobey his Word in thought and action. That is why we deserve damnation and death (Rom. 6:23). But this is not the end of the story.
it is that Jesus came to this world to live perfectly in our place, take the death we deserve, and rise victorious to give us life together with Him (2 Cor. 5:21; Ro. 6:5). Now, by his grace, if we are believers all of his perfect obedience is put into our account for our salvation (Rom. 5:19). We can also seek to obey these commandments depending on his strength, not so that God will love us more, but in response to the love he showed us in Jesus (cf. Jn. 3:16; 15:5; Rom. 12:1 -two).
