The infinite faithfulness of God – What does it consist of according to the Bible?

God’s Infinite Faithfulness refers to the fact that he will never leave us and will always be by his children’s side. This fidelity is eternal, he will never depart from those who have believed in the Lord with faith, fulfill his commandments and do his will. This can be seen in the following passage: “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, a faithful God, who keeps covenant and mercy to those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.” (Deuteronomy 7:9)

The infinite faithfulness of God – What does it consist of according to the Bible?

When the term “fidelity” is spoken, it refers to a person who fulfills what he says, overcoming all obstacles. The infinite faithfulness of the Lord encompasses the promises that we find in the word, which he will fully fulfill.

In this sense, everything that God said he will do will happen and is established in his word. The Lord does not forget his promises to his children and his people. Therefore, what we have believed in him, we must be sure that he will fulfill everything he has said.

Loyalty is loyalty, is to remain firm in any situation. That is why we find the infinite faithfulness of God at all times, and even if we fall, he lifts us up, supports us and helps us to continue with our purpose.

In this way, the Lord does not deny himself, he does not waver, he does not change because his faithfulness is forever, and the purpose in your life will be fulfilled as long as you as a son remain firm as the palm tree, strong as the buffalo and renewed as the eagle.

However, even though we are children of God, we have to live in this world full of temptations, evil, vanity and selfishness, because we have an enemy who is always watching our steps and seeks to divert us from the right path, he wants our foot to stumble on a stone.

The devil knows perfectly well that the Lord is faithful towards his children and that is why he seeks to create doubts and uncertainty so that we think that God left us alone at a difficult time in our lives and withdrew from us.

The word of God reveals to us from the beginning to the end, the infinite fidelity of God and he does not lie, he will fulfill everything he has promised but he will do it in due time and according to his perfect will, as established in the following passage : “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should repent. He said, and he will not? He spoke, and he will not execute it? (Numbers 23:19)

In this sense, it is clear that God is not a liar, that he will carry out his word and it will be fulfilled in his time according to his purpose for each of his children. God is sovereign, so he does as he wants and when he wants, we cannot claim to know more than God because he knows what we cannot see because we have a limited mind.

The faithfulness of Jesus Christ – Old Covenant and New Covenant

In order to deepen the fidelity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the issue related to human fidelity in general and its difficulties must first be addressed.

In this sense, fidelity manifests itself in different ways: Stability in marriage, Loyalty in friendship, vocation, perseverance, patience of parents with a sick or rebellious child, firmness in the word, obsession with a certain artist, unconditionality to a specific person, loyalty to the country, compliance with the teachings of the Church, among others.

On the other hand, fidelity is related to dedication and sacrifice. That is why it is essential to address the faithfulness of Jesus and his ministry in this world in order to have knowledge about the old and new covenant:

1.- God’s faithfulness during the Old Covenant

In Christ Jesus we can find the maximum expression of the faithfulness of the Lord with humanity, the worthy example of human fidelity and the grace to achieve reconciliation.

So the fidelity of Our Lord Jesus Christ does not originate from nothing but is recorded in history and remains as a sample of God’s infinite fidelity to his people.

In this sense, it is important to scrutinize the Holy Scriptures and appreciate how the infinite faithfulness of God is presented in the Old Testament, in which we can find the old covenant.

It should be noted that in the ancient world, in the midst of other peoples who associated with God through nature and its cycles. The people of Israel were the only ones who established a relationship with the Lord in terms of “freedom”, based on a “historical” bond known as the covenant.

The history of the people of Israel began with the liberation of Egypt and the promise of a land. From that moment on, Israel was properly “people”, Yahweh’s chosen people.

This choice of Israel ends with an alliance that would establish the relations of the Lord with his people, reaffirming a historical future. In the burning bush God revealed his name to Moses: YHWH, which means “I am who I am”, “I am who I will be”, “I am who I will be with you” (Exodus 3:13-15).

In this way, the Alliance established a pact of co-belonging and fidelity between the Lord and the people of Israel: “You will be my people and I will be your God” (Exodus 6: 7). So the Lord was committing himself through an irrevocable contract in favor of that people who had been released from captivity.

For this reason, this town was obliged not to pay tribute to any divinity, they only had to worship Yahweh. This choice sealed by this alliance did not mean any favoritism, since in the same way in which God remained faithful and merciful with Israel, in Israel there had to be faithful and compassionate love with its neighbor and justice with the poor.

Fidelity to our God would be fulfilled through the commandments that implemented God’s love for Israel and established the bases of a good coexistence with others, where God’s justice reigned.

In this sense, this ancient alliance must be considered as an act of God’s love: “And because he loved your fathers, he chose their offspring after them, and brought you out of Egypt by his presence and by his mighty power.” (Deuteronomy 4:37)

The love that encloses the alliance represents the firmness of man, who has the ability to fulfill his pacts, but also has to do with brotherhood between families. So this covenant refers to two terms: “salvation” and “fidelity.”

God’s infinite faithfulness then it resembles matrimonial love, forgiveness of neighbor, and the origin of this Israelite alliance and the fulfillment of the promises that are indicated in the history of this people, are exclusively Yahweh’s own.

The history of Israel represents the history of the faithfulness of the Lord, despite the ingratitude shown by the people. So when Israel settled in the promised land and managed to implement its monarchy, God did not immediately withdraw King David, but rather renewed the promise of a Messiah, where the alliance would be presented in terms of filiation: “I will be his father and he will be my son” (2 Samuel 7:14-16).

In this sense, we have in this passage a latent promise today, where Our Lord reaffirms his infinite fidelity and assures us that he will always be our Father. He also sends his only son Jesus as a sign of his love and his mercy towards his people, so that despite our weaknesses, he will continue to be our Father and we his children. This is the true faithfulness of God.

In this sense, when the people of Israel were deported to Babylon some time later, losing their territory, their political independence, the temple and the priesthood, God, through the prophets, showed his people their sin and their negligence regarding the Alliance established.

In this way, the prophets attributed the failure of the exile to idolatry and disloyalty of the people and the kings towards the alliance established with God. But God announced a new future to his people and to humanity through the prophets.

In this regard, in the Bible we can find great characters like Hosea, who proclaims that the Lord will not abandon Israel: “At that time I will answer, says the Lord, I will answer the heavens, and they will answer the earth. And the earth will respond to wheat, wine, and oil, and they will respond to Jezreel. And I will sow it for myself on the ground, and I will have mercy on Lo-ruhama; and I will say to Lo-ammi: You are my people, and he will say: My God.” (Hosea 2:21-25)

On the other hand, Jeremiah prophesies a New Covenant, one in which the Lord will give each one of the Israelites what until now they have not had, the ability to fulfill the Covenant: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, in which I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. Not like the covenant I made with their fathers on the day I took their hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; for they made void my covenant, though I was a husband to them, saith the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law in his mind, and I will write it on his heart; and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Jeremiah 31:31-33)

In this passage, the Lord gives us the promise of a new covenant, despite the fact that the people of Israel invalidated the old covenant due to their disobedience and lack of faith. This people had the privilege of seeing the wonders and prodigies of Jehovah of hosts.

witnessed the Power of God to send the plagues, part the red sea, bring out the people and free them from oppression. He also had the opportunity to see the Glory of God in the day as a pillar of cloud and at night as a pillar of fire. But when they felt hungry and tired, they doubted God’s provision, even though he sent them manna from heaven.

In this order of ideas, God announced the new alliance as a new pact that would materialize through the arrival of the Messiah, the son of God, who would sacrifice himself for each one of us to redeem them from all guilt.

2.- God’s fidelity during the New Covenant

the old alliance that was established between the people of Israel and God arose with the exodus of that people, which was freed from the physical slavery that they had had to live for many years. However, the majority of these people did not know how to value this pact and that is why they had to go through different tests.

In this sense, the new alliance is presented as a new beginning, a new pact, in which Jesus Christ becomes present in this world to change the course of humanity and defeat the enemy forever. God makes a new alliance with his people and sends the Messiah to free them once again from the slavery in which they found themselves, since they were slaves to sin and the ties of the world.

This Covenant between God and his people was manifested in that relationship of God as the Father of Jesus and of Jesus as the Son of God. So our Father trusts in Jesus, in the same way that Jesus trusts in his Father. But this is a relationship centered on trust, and its goal is the advent of the Kingdom, where the Father entrusts to Jesus the arrival of the Kingdom of him and Jesus…
