Service to God is exclusive, incompatible with other forms of slavery (Mt 6,24; Lk 16,13). The perfect slavery, the faithful submission, is that of Mary (Lk 1,38.48). But the service to God is never in fear, but in the freedom and fidelity of children (Jn 8,3336) and friends (Jn 15,15); service to God demands service to others (Mt 20,27). Jesus Christ, being Lord, has become a servant of all, because his headship must always be a service, so that his disciples learn to be servants of all. In Christianity, whoever wants to be great must be the servant of all, in imitation of Jesus Christ, who came to serve and not to be served (Mt 20,25-28; Mk 10,42-45; Lk 22,24 -30). The attitude of Jesus Christ on earth is one of service (Mt 20,28), the same one that he will adopt on the last day, if at his arrival he finds us in vigilant expectation (Lk 12,37). To serve Jesus Christ is to follow him (Jn 12,26), and to serve men is to serve Jesus Christ himself (Mt 25,44). -> servant; sacrifice.

Linked to Christ and his love, to his initiative of merciful charity, the Christian community cannot leave the people at the mercy of its needs, it must strive to make itself present in some way, continuing the work of the Master. We cannot say: “Let him get away with it!” We have an obligation to serve the people. The Church cannot evade this service, just as she cannot evade the fatigue and risks of dialogue with society, closing herself off in her ecclesial life and letting history go by itself. The ministry of the Christian community consists, therefore, in unifying the Word of God and history. The Church, knowing that divine life has been granted to man out of love, cannot interpret the present solely in the light of the human sciences, however important they may be; she fully lives and serves this present, recognizing in it the signs of God’s presence. The “You give them to eat” urges us in our history of the Church and commits us to show how in every human reality there vibrates a tension towards a greater mystery. Here the obedience of the Church to the Word is transformed into a cultural service, aimed at finding solutions and introducing into them ferments that help to live the joyful richness of divine love. And so the “Give them something to eat yourselves” also connects with situations of misery and poverty, with the projects and demands of human beings, in order to invent the pastoral mission of the Church and direct it towards the total promotion of the person.

A. Verbs sharat (tr’v; , 8334), “to serve, to minister”. The word is found less than 100 times in the Old Testament. In the vast majority of cases, sharat appears as an infinitive or participle. In cases where the participle is translated as a verbal noun, e.g. eg “servant” or “minister”, the emphasis is punctual, that is, it does not communicate the prolongation or repetition of the action. The almost exclusive use of the intensive verb form is another grammatical feature of sharat. The reader of the Spanish Bible will not be able to perceive the particular meaning of sharat because it has a synonym, >abad (or >ebed), which is also translated as “serve” or “server”. Sharat often denotes the “service” offered as part of Israel’s worship; some 60 of its 97 cases have this meaning. When Samuel was still a child, he “ministered to the Lord before Eli the priest” (1Sa 2:11); the Lord called him while “serving the Lord before Eli” (1Sa 3:1 rva). This “service” was solely to honor God; Israel could not be “like the other nations, like the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone” (Eze 20:32 rva). In the temple of Ezekiel’s vision, the Levites who “served before their idols” were forbidden by God to serve in the priesthood (Eze 44:12). God “set apart the tribe of Levi † ¦ to † ¦ serve him, and to bless in his name” (Deu 10: 8 rva). From among the men of the tribe of Levi, Moses anointed Aaron and his sons and consecrated them to “minister” in the priesthood (Exo 29:30). The Levites who were not of Aaron’s family, although chosen to serve God in perpetuity, acted as assistants to the priests, performing physical tasks such as guarding doors, killing burnt offerings, and caring for the altars and utensils of the sanctuary. (1Ch 15:2; Eze 44:11). Yet Isaiah predicts that a day will come when “And foreigners †¦ will serve you” (Isa 60:10). In a good number of situations the word is used to denote “service” to some other person, generally of a higher rank or of a higher class; however, the term never refers to the servitude of a slave. Moses receives the following instruction: “Bring the tribe of Levi near, and make them stand before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him” (Num 3:6; cf. 8.26). Elisha “ministered” to Elijah (1Ki 19:21). Abisag “served” David (1Ki 1:15). Various categories of officials “served” David (1Ch 28:1). David’s son Amnon had “a servant who served him” (2Sa 13:17). Seven eunuchs “served before King Ahasuerus” (Esther 1:10). It also speaks of “king’s servants, his courtiers” (Est 2: 2). >abad (db’ to God on this mountain” (Exo 3:12). The term is frequently used with another verb: “The Lord your God shall you fear, and Him alone shall you serve” (Deu 6:13), or “If ye obey carefully obey the commandments that I am giving you today, loving the Lord your God and serving him” (Deu 11:13 rv 95). All nations are commanded: “Serve the Lord with gladness” (Psa 100:2). During Messiah’s reign “All nations shall serve him” (Psa 72:11) The verb and noun can be used together as in Num 8:11 “They shall serve in the ministry of the Lord.” B. Names >aboí†dah ( hd;/b[

The word service takes on two opposite meanings in the Bible, depending on whether it designates the submission of man to God or the subjection of man by man in the form of slavery. Salvation history teaches that man’s liberation depends on his submission to God and that “to serve God is to reign” (Blessing of the palms).

I. SERVICE AND SLAVERY. In human relationships it already means serving two profoundly different concrete situations: that of the *slave, as it appears in the pagan world, in which man in servitude is placed at the level of animals and things, and that of the *servant. , as defined by the law of the people of God: the slave does not cease to be a man and has his place in the family, so…
