JESUS FREES A SHOULDERED WOMAN (Devotional No. 074)

The Scripture tells us in Luke 13:10-13 “Jesus taught in the synagogue on the Sabbath; and there was a woman there who had had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years, and she was bent over, and she could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her and said: Woman, you are free from your disease. And he laid his hands on her; and she straightened up afterwards, and she glorified God.”

2) Secondly, the Scripture tells us that this woman was physically bent over (that is, she could not straighten up completely, her spine had a difficulty and she could not straighten up), so the spiritual situation was seen in the natural (“bent over”).

Surely, her conjugal, family, social and spiritual life was affected by this, because for many Jews this woman was under a curse, in hidden sin, under the punishment of God, etc.

This stooped woman represents or speaks to us of a spiritual burden that is carried and is so heavy that it bends one’s forces (we speak of things such as: crises, wounds, fears, worries, failure, resentments, frustrations, and other things, that by not delivering them to God produce fatigue, exhaustion and emotional and spiritual exhaustion.

3) Thirdly we see the manifestation of the power of God. This woman is healed by Jesus, the Bible tells us: “When Jesus saw her, he called her and said: Woman, you are free from your disease. And he laid his hands on her; and she straightened up immediately, and she glorified God” Luke 13: 12-13. As we can see the Lord Jesus always acts in our favor.

We must disregard everything that the Lord Jesus did for her: “he saw her”, “he called her”, “he told her” and “he touched her”. He did what many did not do for her.

We can conclude things like: Perhaps she was not important to men, but the Lord Jesus saw her; perhaps no one took her into account, but the Lord Jesus called her; perhaps few spoke to him, but the Lord Jesus told him; Perhaps her husband had not touched her for many years, nor did her family hug her, but the Lord Jesus touched her. Jesus Christ is good and forever is his mercy.

4) Fourth, it is very important to keep in mind that you are a child of God and he will always be watching over you. Jesus wants you to lift your head in victory and blessing.

The biblical passage tells us that: “and she straightened herself up and glorified God”; for eighteen years her eyes looked to the ground, her self-esteem was at its lowest, her affliction weighed heavily, but she “straightened up”, this word “straightened up” is translated from the Greek term “anorthoo” which also means: rrebuild, restore, reset, straighten. Then the Lord Jesus healed, delivered and restored this woman completely.

Jesus frees and heals the bent woman.

Outline: Jesus heals the bent woman.

Introduction: In the gospels we are shown the Lord Jesus setting captives free, casting out demons, restoring many men, and also healing many sick women. An example was the healing or deliverance of the bent woman, according to Luke 13:10-17.

Section that in the Reina Valera Bible is titled: Jesus heals a woman on the Sabbath.

The truth is that when the Lord Jesus appeared in the land of Israel exercising the ministry that the Father had given him, the lives of many were transformed: they were healed, liberated, restored, forgiven; and the Lord Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday and today and for all time.

1) The condition of the sick woman.

Luke 13:10-11 “Jesus taught in the synagogue on the Sabbath; and there was a woman there who had had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years, and she was bent over, and she could not straighten up at all.”

The first thing we can observe is that she was a pious woman. The Lord Jesus came to this synagogue to teach (a fundamental facet in the ministry of Jesus). We must bear in mind that only Jews and Gentile proselytes entered the synagogue (she was a Jew and she was worshiping the Lord). She went there to hear the teaching of God’s law, and to give him worship.

She normally went to her synagogue; surely, there were many synagogues at that time, but Jesus was there, and when he is there anything can happen. In the presence of God wonderful things happen.

This woman who was later healed by the Lord Jesus, was afflicted for eighteen years. The Bible says that eighteen years ago “she had a spirit of infirmity” (but she was a Jew, she was under the covenant of Israel, she was a descendant of Abraham, and she attended the synagogue faithfully), but this spirit afflicted her, her life was very difficult.

That spirit tormented her, she tried to live a normal life, perhaps she tried to help herself with something, but this situation had a spiritual origin (not all illness has a demonic origin, but Jesus is the healer of all). There is nothing impossible for our God.

The word of God teaches us that this woman was bent over, that is, she “could not straighten up completely”), so her spiritual condition was seen in the natural (she was “bent over”).

It is not difficult to think that his life situation, in all aspects, was very complicated. His conjugal, family, social and spiritual life was affected by this, because for many he was under a curse or in hidden sin. Despite all this, she sought God’s presence in the synagogue.

In a symbolic or representative way, the bent figure tells us about a load he was carrying, and it was so heavy that he had broken his strength (we are talking about things like crises, wounds, fear, worry, failure, resentments, frustrations, lack of forgiveness, among others). other things).

(I invite you to read: “Trust in God, even if everything is against you”).

two) The sick woman was healed by Jesus.

Luke 13:12-13 “When Jesus saw her, he called her and said, Woman, you are free from your sickness. And he laid his hands on her; and she straightened up afterwards, and she glorified God.”

As we can see throughout the gospels, the Lord Jesus acts on our behalf. Look at all that Jesus did for her: he “saw” her, “called” her, “told” her, and “touched” her. They were actions of the Lord in favor of the woman.

The safest thing is that this woman was not important to men, but the Lord Jesus saw her; perhaps no one took her into account, but the Lord Jesus called her; perhaps few spoke to him about her, but the Lord Jesus told him; Perhaps her husband had not touched her for many years, nor did her family hug her, but the Lord Jesus touched her. You must always keep in mind: You are a child of God and he will always be aware of your life.

It is very interesting, also to observe that the Lord Jesus wants you to raise your head. The biblical passage tells us that: “and she straightened up and glorified God”, for eighteen years her eyes looking down, her self-esteem on the ground, her affliction weighed heavily, but she “straightened up”, she raised her head.

“He straightened” is a word that translates from the Greek term “anorthoo” which also means: Rebuild, restore, restore, straighten. Then, by the power of God, this woman straightens up and she “glorifies God”, praises the Lord, as she had been unable to do for many years.

Most likely, this woman in such a condition could not flow in a powerful adoration, but now she lives a new level of adoration, of the presence of God, a new level of glory, something that she had not lived before, there is a liberation in her soul, in his spirit and enters into a new freedom of worship. In the presence of God we are all transformed and restored.

The Lord Jesus Christ has not changed, he is still Almighty God, he can restore your life, your worship to him.

I don’t know your situation and I don’t know what could keep you upside down (problems, setbacks, drugs, marital crisis, disappointments, witchcraft, financial bankruptcy, etc.), but I can tell you that Jesus has the power to help you overcome all adversity and Free yourself from all chains.

Sometimes obstacles come your way, but Christ is there to help you. Do not allow religion to separate you from the true God and from all that he has for you.

Luke 13:14-15 “But the ruler of the synagogue, angry that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the crowd, There are six days in which you must work; on these, therefore, come and be well, and not on the Sabbath. Then the Lord answered him and said, “Hypocrite, does not every one of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead him to drink?”

3) The bent woman is freed by the Lord Jesus.

Luke 13:16 “And this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan had bound for eighteen years, was she not to be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?”

We must highlight here the expression: “Daughter of Abraham”; title that speaks to us of inheritance, she had the right to messianic blessings, to the blessing of Abraham, she was their sister (after all, they were all descendants of Abraham). The conclusion of the Lord Jesus was: “If you untie an ox on the Sabbath day to take it to drink, how can you not untie this woman from that demonic bond?”

The chains that afflicted this sick woman for eighteen years were broken by the power of the Lord. Christ broke that bond. The word “ligature” is translated here from the Greek term “desmon” which also means: chain, rope with which oxen are tied to the yoke, prison, prisoner’s shackle, jail, disability or illness. But, Christ came to set captives free.

It is interesting to note here that in the Interlinear Biblical Dictionary the word “ligature” is translated as “bond”; therefore, it allows us to see those things with which the enemy of our souls has influence or authority against a Christian person.

The most important thing is to turn to the blood of Christ that cleanses us from all sin, and to the power of the Holy Spirit, since the Bible itself tells us: “The yoke will rot because of the anointing”, Isaiah 10:27.

This sick woman went to seek God in the synagogue that day, as was her custom surely; but on that occasion, there was Jesus and his life was transformed. That meeting was different, because Christ was there, the presence of God is the most important thing in our lives.

The Lord Jesus healed the sick woman, and this reminds us that he has power over all sickness; he freed the bent woman from his bondage, and that reminds us that Christ has the power to break spiritual chains and bonds. Jesus healed this woman on the Sabbath, which teaches us and reminds us that at all times he is our deliverer.
