Cephas (Gr. K’fás; transliteration of Aram. Kêfâ’ “rock” or “stone”). Nickname that Jesus applied to the apostle Simon, son of Jonas (Joh 1:42; 21:15; 1Co 1: 12; 3:22; 9:5; 15:5). But Pedro, transliteration of gr. Pétros and equivalent to aram. Kêfa’, is the best known form (the other is Pétra).

Name given by Jesus to Peter in Mat 16:18. You are cefas, and on this cefas I will build my Church. He constituted it in “cefas”, in the rock of his Church. After being resurrected, he named him the “Pastor”, only him, with the other apostles present, Jm. 21:15-17.

vet, (Aramaic “stone”). Equivalent to Petros or Pedro. Nickname given by Christ to Simon, son of Jonah (Jn. 1:42). The “rock” on which Our Lord said that he would build his Church is not Peter, the man, but the confession of faith that he made (Mt. 16: 16-18). (See PETER).
